MY IMMIGRATION STORY
“Coffee Talking Out of Mental Coffins,” a short documentary film about my mental health and immigration journey. “Coffee Talking Out of Mental Coffins” was premiered at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival in Sep 2021
The 5-minutes documentary recounts the moment I received my green card after 27 years of struggling with the immigration system in the US and how the immigration system impacted my mental health and family.
This film is made possible by NamQuyen (Q) Le‘s amazing and tireless work in directing and editing. Special thanks to Rachel Audette at The Turquoise Camera for cinematography and Bryan Vo for the soundtrack and sound mixing.
It still feels unreal and surreal that there is a short film about me. Click here to read more about my reactions, behind the scenes, and my current insights about immigration.
Please enjoy the film!

What People Are Saying About JR
Working with JR, I discovered tools and techniques to help others and became so much more confident in my ability to empathize and communicate with others who may have experienced mental health issues. His approach helped reinforce my learning and provided me with much to think about, skills to apply when back at my own college campus, and strategies to use when leading workshops
I gained more confidence in talking about mental health-related topics. JR’s workshop really helped me better understand what I can do to reach out for resources, and how I can help others. The biggest takeaway is that “I am not alone”, and I also hope that society talks about mental health like how they talk about sports. This was overall a very inspirational and educational workshop, and I am so glad I got to participate in it.
