Talking Circle – Men & Mental Health

Due to a long history of male-dominated traditions and mindsets, men experience and face both self-stigma and social stigma about showing their emotions or talking about their feelings. The inability to talk about mental health can have dire health and societal consequences. Men with mental health challenges are less likely to seek treatment and support. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men are more likely to die by suicide than women.

As a man, the ability to express and talk about mental and emotional health without concern for social stigma and pressure can be empowering and refreshing. The capacity to recognize signs and symptoms of mental health challenges within oneself can be healing and therapeutic. In addition, the ability to see different signs and symptoms can guide you in providing practical and even lifesaving mental health support to people (men) that you care about.

In this workshop, we are going to unlearn the long history of unhealthy male masculinity traits and relearn how to be a more humane man in our current society. Part of this relearning is to educate and equip ourselves with various mental health tools that normalize mental health conversations among men, to further improve our overall well-being, and utilize these tools to provide practical support to other men.

Takeaways:

  • What toxic masculinity is and the mental health impact of it.
  • The mental health stigma that men have.
  • To talk about mental health with confidence.
